The Virtual Learning Academy will embark on an exciting new chapter in our school’s journey starting this summer when we transition to a new location starting this summer. This transition offers exciting opportunities for growth and innovation and will enable us to continue to provide a safe and nurturing environment conducive to learning.

Here are some key details about our new location:

New Location: 3403 Lapeer Road, Port Huron (the former Baker College)
Relocation Timeline: Starting July 2024

For the 2024-2025 school year, our program will temporarily pivot to a primarily online model. This adjustment is necessary as we undergo renovations at our new location. Despite the shift to online learning, we are committed to maintaining the same high-quality instruction and support that you have come to expect. Our staff will be available during drop-in and office hours to assist, answer questions, and offer guidance. Your success remains our top priority, and we are dedicated to ensuring you have the resources and support you need.

Additionally, we are thrilled to announce that we will be hosting a series of exciting outside activities in the summer and early fall to kick off the 2024-2025 school year. These activities are not just about fun, but also about fostering a sense of community. They will provide opportunities for students and families to meet staff, socialize with other students, and start building those important connections that make our school community so special.

We will share updates regularly throughout the relocation process through. We understand the importance of clear communication during times of change and will keep you informed every step of the way.

Where are we relocating to?
3403 Lapeer Road, Port Huron, MI 48060 (The former location of Baker College).

Why are we relocating?
We have leased our current building since 2010. The lease was not renewed for the 2024-2025 school year.

What will this transition entail?
Our new building is undergoing renovations to meet State School Code Requirements. During this time, students will work primarily remotely with the exception of scheduled drop-in hours.

What are the limitations of a drop-in site?
Renovations will be completed so that our new building meets the requirements of the school code laws in Michigan, including safety and air quality. While we are completing these necessary renovations, Michigan law restricts the number of students in the building to five at one time. Drop-in hours will be available Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Scheduling with your caseload teacher is required.

What is the timeline for this transition?

Thursday, June 27 – Last student day at the current location
July 1–14 – Two-week summer break for staff and students (After-hours support still available)
Monday, July 22 – Open Drop-in and Kickoff event at the new location, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (subject to change)

Are we going to be working from home?
Students will be working primarily from home, with the exception of pre-arranged and scheduled drop-in hours, while we are undergoing the necessary school code renovations.

What if I don’t log in remotely?
Students will still be required to make regular academic progress and meet established goals as identified by their caseload teacher. Remote face-to-face meetings with VLA staff will also be required. These will take place through Google Meet.

Am I going to see other students?
Great question, and yes! We have already begun conversations and planning to provide some amazing event and field trip opportunities to students during the summer and into the 2024-25 school year.

What supports/services will I still have access to?
During the relocation process, we will continue to provide the same high-quality education without interruption. Students will still have access to these supports and resources:
